That's right. I'm not talking about Fox News, I'm talking about Oregon voters. Yesterday, voters went to the polls approving two major tax hikes - one on individuals making more than $125,000 per year (or $250,000 for households), and one on corporations. The conventional wisdom was that in Oregon any tax hike put to the voters would go down to defeat. In the end it wasn't even close. Voters showed their common sense and commitment to essential programs and services. Measures 66 and 67 passed by 54-46 and 53-47 percentage margins, respectively. Together, they will provide almost $750 million in new revenue to the state of Oregon.
The good news for anyone interested in ensuring that everyone pays their fair share, is that other states are now looking to follow suit: Washington state and California are now considering doing the same. Could Vermont be next?
